Simchat Torah means “Rejoicing in Torah” or “Joy of God’s Teaching and Instruction.” It is a joyous holiday in which one celebrates and expresses their love and adoration of the Torah and their commitment to study it. As seen in the name, this holiday celebrates the Torah; it celebrates both the completion and the beginning of the Torah reading cycle.

The completion of the Torah reading cycle is a time of great joy, observed with dancing and clapping, singing and rejoicing. During the celebrations of this day, all of the Torah scrolls are taken out from the Ark and carried around the bimah (the table in a synagogue from which the Torah is read) seven times.

Learn a little bit about Simchat Torah in this study with Ralph Messer as you discover the celebratory traditions surrounding this special Jewish holiday!
